Event: SEPTA to conduct a railroad emergency preparedness drill along the R3 Media-Elwyn regional rail line in Media, PA. The exercise will simulate a collision between an automobile and a passenger train along with a diesel fuel spill. This drill is intended to test the capability and preparedness of SEPTA, local fire companies, and the Delaware County Emergency Management Department.
Date: Sunday, November 19, 2006
Time: Approximately 9 a.m. until noon
Place: R3 Media-Elwyn regional rail line – Media Station railroad yard facility
Details: SEPTA’s emergency preparedness drill will involve a simulated collision between an automobile and a R3 Media-Elwyn regional rail train at a grade crossing. The impact will result in a simulated fuel spill, a victim trapped in the auto and numerous passenger and crew injuries on the train.
SEPTA personnel as well as members from the local fire department in Media will respond to the simulated emergency. The Delaware County Emergency Management Department will also be involved in the drill.
Rescue responders will be required to gain entry to the train in order to evacuate passengers and crewmembers, rescue the victim caught in the auto and contain the chemical spill.
SEPTA conducts annual emergency disaster drills in an effort to provide SEPTA personnel, area fire departments, and rescue units with an opportunity to test and practice their mass casualty response skills.
R3 Media-Elwyn regional rail service will not be impacted by the drill and will operate on a normal weekend schedule.
