Regular SEPTA Market-Frankford El Service Set to Return to West Philadelphia on Monday
Aug. 28, 2006
PHILADELPHIA, PA - SEPTA will restore regular train service on the western portion of the Market-Frankford Line beginning at 5 a.m. on Monday, August 28 following the completion of a 16-day construction outage scheduled as part of the Market Street Elevated (MSE) reconstruction project.
SEPTA achieved several construction milestones during two extended summer outages conducted in July and August including the demolition and renewal of the El guideway structure between 51st and 62nd Streets, the construction of new platforms, track and third rail electrical power systems, installation of 35 new single and multiple column bents, and the continued rebuilding of 60th and 52nd Street Stations.
MSE construction is ongoing but will only require weekend shuttle bus service during the fall. With the completion of this 16-day service interruption, no other extended outages are scheduled to impact regular weekday train service this year.
The MSE project is rebuilding the El, which opened for service in 1907, in parts of West Philadelphia and eastern Delaware County. It includes the reconstruction of the five existing stations -- 46th Street, 52nd Street, 56th Street, 60th Street and 63rd Street.
The construction project will also replace 11,000 feet of the guideway between Millbourne Station and 46th Street with a new single column bent structure which will open up Market Street and significantly improve the flow of traffic.
