R5 Paoli-Thorndale Construction Shifts to Outbound Tracks

August 9, 2007

PHILADELPHIA, PA - An ongoing railroad improvement project along Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor will shift to the outbound tracks on Monday, August 13 and impact SEPTA’s R5 Paoli-Thorndale Regional Rail Line until late November.

The shift marks the start of the project’s final phase as workers will replace a section of outbound track located between Paoli and Overbrook Stations. As part of the project, which began in May, the inbound track between these stations has already been upgraded.

New train schedules will be in effect beginning Sunday, August 12 for SEPTA Paoli-Thorndale riders in order to accommodate more than 140 workers who will be in the track area installing 80,000 concrete ties and 60 miles of continuous welded rail.

When the project is complete, outbound passengers traveling through this section of track on SEPTA and Amtrak trains will encounter a speedier, quieter, smoother, and more comfortable ride. Inbound passengers now experience these improved conditions as a result of the project.

Passengers should obtain schedules with the August 12 effective date for specific train time information as the new schedules will reflect anincrease in travel times between stations for weekday and weekend passengers.

The changes include:

Outbound Service (to Paoli-Thorndale)
·Off peak weekday trains will operate hourly instead of every half-hour. Also, Paoli-Thorndale passengers traveling to Lansdale-Doylestown will have to transfer to connecting trains in Center City. Passengers traveling beyond Glenside may experience transfer time delays of up to 40 minutes.

·Outbound trains will operate on Track #3 requiring passengers to use cross track platforms to board trains.

Inbound Service (to Center City Philadelphia)
·Service will operate hourly during the midday.

·Although work is taking place on the outbound track, there will be adjustments to inbound weekday trains due to the completion of inbound track work and higher operating speeds.

Weekend service (Inbound and Outbound)
·SEPTA is undertaking a separate project on the Lansdale-Doylestown segment of the line that will require weekend service adjustments on all trains. Additionally, all outbound trains will have eight minutes of travel time added to the commute from Center City to Paoli.

The new Paoli-Thorndale (R5) schedule in effect during the project is available at stations and online at www.septa.org. SEPTA will also distribute the schedules at affected railroad station parking lots. Passengers will find posters at stations as well as informational brochures and leaflets on trains notifying them of the upcoming changes.
