New 60th Street Station to Open Monday on MFL

Next Stage of Construction Project to Close 46th Street Station

June 14, 2007

PHILADELPHIA, PA — SEPTA’s new 60th Street Station will open for passenger service on the Market-Frankford Line beginning Monday, June 18 as construction progresses on the Market Street Elevated (MSE) reconstruction project.

The new station at 60th and Market Streets is the second station to debut on the West Philadelphia portion of the El as part of MSE. Similar to 56th Street Station, which opened in February of 2006, 60th Street Station features large platforms, escalators and elevators along with a brightly lit interior and exterior design.

Simultaneously, the next stage of MSE requires the closure of 46th Street Station at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 15 as demolition crews must raze the existing station in order to construct a new modern station building in its place. Construction for the new 46th Street Station will cause the station to be closed for about one year.

While 46th Street Station is closed, El shuttle buses will operate between 69th Street Terminal (69th & Market Streets) and 40th Street Station (40th & Market Streets) during weekend shutdowns from 8 p.m. on Fridays until 5 a.m. on Mondays.

This work will also result in SEPTA operating bus Routes 31 and 64 on local detours. Route 31 will detour eastbound (to Center City) from Market Street via Chestnut Street to 52nd Street, 52nd Street to Haverford Avenue, Haverford Avenue to 46th Street and then return to its regular routing. As MSE heads into its summer construction schedule, SEPTA is planning for extended service shutdowns in July and August. The first extended shutdown will be for nine consecutive days beginning Friday, July 13 at 8 p.m. until Monday, July 23 at 5 a.m. During this time shuttle buses will operate in place of trains between 69th Street Terminal and 40th Street Station. SEPTA will shut down train service again and use shuttle buses on this portion of the line during a 16-day period from Friday, August 10 until Monday, August 27.

To date the MSE project has replaced a significant amount of its old structure with new single-beam support columns and three additional stations are currently under construction at 46th Street, 52nd Street and Millbourne. Approximately 75% of the old structure will have been replaced by the end of the 2007 construction schedule.

Weekend shutdowns will also continue throughout the remainder of the spring and summer. Additional information about the MSE project is available online at www.theelseptaatwork.com. Information on all SEPTA service is also available by calling (215) 580-7800.
