Shuttle Buses to Operate on the El for Two Consecutive Weekends

Buses Will Operate Between 56th Street Station & 69th Street Terminal

January 24, 2008

PHILADELPHIA, PA - SEPTA will replace a portion of train service on the Market Frankford Line with shuttle buses for two consecutive weekends beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday, January 25 as work progresses on the Market Street Elevated (MSE) reconstruction project.

The interruption of regular train service is necessary in order to allow the installation of platform canopies and a new overpass at Millbourne Station. Millbourne Station is currently closed and scheduled to reopen in the summer of 2008. Crews will also be conducting station work at 60th Street during the weekend service interruptions.

As a result, SEPTA will operate shuttle buses in place of train service between 56th Street Station and 69th Street Terminal during the weekends of January 25-28 and February 1-4 beginning at 8 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. the following Monday morning.

Weekend riders traveling into Center City will board shuttle buses at 69th Street Terminal (69th & Market Streets) and then travel to 63rd Street where they will detour to Chestnut Street. The shuttle buses will continue to operate on Chestnut and then to 57th Street and turn onto Market for travel to 56th Street Station where riders will transfer to the El.

From Center City, regular El service will operate to 56th Street Station. Riders traveling beyond 56th Street will transfer to shuttle buses at 56th and Market. The shuttle buses will then detour onto Walnut Street and travel to Cobbs Creek (63rd Street) before returning to Market for travel to 69th Street Terminal.

Following these two weekends, SEPTA will operate regular weekend train service between 69th Street Terminal and the Frankford Transportation Center.Major construction on the project and weekend shuttle bus service will resume in March.

MSE is one of the largest construction projects in the history of SEPTA. The project will reconstruct five stations in West Philadelphia (46th Street, 52nd Street, 56th Street, 60th Street, and 63rd Street) and Millbourne Station in eastern Delaware County.

The construction project will also replace 11,000 feet of the guideway between Millbourne Station and 46th Street with a new single column bent structure that will open up Market Street and significantly improve the flow of traffic.

SEPTA’s Community Information Center provides passengers, residents, and businesses with information regarding the project and is accessible by telephone at 215-580-6484. Information on all SEPTA service is available online or by telephone at 215-580-7800.
