SEPTA General Manager "Drives" A Safe Start to Philly Beer Week 2015

Manuel McDonnell Smith
Public Information Manager

From humble beginnings in 2008, Philly Beer Week has grown to become the largest celebration of its kind in America, featuring a week-long menu of festivals, dinners, tours, and of course, tastings. With so many things to do, in so many places arose a question. How to get everyone from here, to there? The simple answer was SEPTA. From the beginning, SEPTA has partnered with the organizers of the event to promote transit as a convenient and responsible transportation choice for Beer Week and beyond.

This year, that partnership came with a special responsibility bestowed upon SEPTA General Manager Joe Casey. His job was to safely transport the festivals' official "Hammer of Glory" AKA "HOG" from the Inquirer's Newsroom in Center City to the Hop Angel Brahaus in Fox Chase. Joe as a trusted transit leader (and beer connoisseur) readily accepted the challenge. Which chariot did he choose to get from here to there? Of course, it was SEPTA's Fox Chase Line.

Starting with a quick handover at Market East's Jefferson Station, Joe, his traveling compatriots and the "HOG" boarded the 9:19am departure from Center City. During the journey, he kept a close eye on the omnipotent symbol of Philly Beer Week, releasing it from his custody only for an official "inspection" by the train's Conductor and Engineer.

In a quick 25 minute flash, the caravan arrived at Fox Chase Station, just a short walk away from the Brauhaus. Waiting there eagerly were the next merry bunch who would escort the "HOG" to its next destination: The Philly Roller Girls Team. The handoff included a special toast read by Joe which read:

"Noble carrier, we entrust you with The Hammer of Glory, the omnipotent symbol of our beloved Philadelphia Beer Week. May your journey be safe. Work ye up a thirst, for there shall be a beer waiting for you at your destination. Godspeed!"

With his duty satisfied, Joe returned to Center City aboard the next soon-departing Fox Chase Line train. Although the HOG's transit journey is complete for 2015, SEPTA is ready to provide safe, convenient, and responsible rides for all who attend the events of Philly Beer Week. Be sure to stop by the SEPTA table at the official Philly Beer Week Beer Garden for directions, travel information, route advice, and even free ISEPTAPHILLY t-shirts for a lucky few all week long at The Shambles at Headhouse Square.
