Spreading the Word about Fire Prevention

Heather Redfern
SEPTA Public Information Manager

October is Fire Prevention Month and for the 16th consecutive year, SEPTA joined the Philadelphia Fire Department in kicking off the activities by unveiling the fire safety car cards that will appear in 2,500 SEPTA buses, trains, trolleys and stations. Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Derrick J.V. Sawyer and SEPTA Assistant General Manager of System Safety Scott Sauer installed the first card on a bus during a ceremony held at Ladder 2 in Old City.

"We want our passengers to be safe not only when commuting on our system, but also when they are at home," said Sauer. "The fire prevention car cards allow us to further our commitment to customer safety education."

The SEPTA fire prevention car cards feature new safety tips each year. The 2015 theme, "Cooking Hazards Endanger Families (C.H.E.F.)" is designed to educate the public about safe cooking practices they should follow at home to prevent tragedies. Cooking is a leading cause of household fires.

"The SEPTA car cards help get our fire safety message out to one million people in our region," said Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Derrick J.V. Sawyer. "That's many more than our firefighters alone can reach."

The Fire Prevention Month car card program is just one example of how SEPTA and the Philadelphia Fire Department partner throughout the year. "The Authority hosts and participates in emergency preparedness drills, with our safety personnel working alongside Philadelphia firefighters," said Sauer. "We also hold training sessions for firefighters to help them learn our equipment and facilities in advance of emergencies. It is important that SEPTA supports all of the efforts of our firefighters, from fire prevention to emergency response."
