Recent Retirees Celebrated for Years of Service

During a retirement luncheon held at Market East Station, General Manager Joseph Casey, and Assistant General Manager of Human Resources, Susan Van Buren honored 255 employees who, after many years of dedicated service to the Authority and the public, had retired between July of 2010 and June 2011.

In addition to attending the farewell celebration accompanied by their friends and families, the newly retired vehicle operators, engineers, maintenance and administrative staff each received a commemorative personal photo and keepsake of the special occasion.

Several tables were specifically reserved for retirees with 40 or more years of service. This year, 11 retirees held this most notable honor. James Perry and Joseph Walker ranked as the two retirees with the most years of service. Both were recognized for more then 40 years of employment with SEPTA.

Perry's last position before retirement was a Yard Motor Operator. "I enjoyed my years of service, SEPTA provided me with many fond memories," said Perry. "After 44 years on the job, I'm looking forward to enjoying some downtime with my family."

As an operator on Market-Frankford Line trains Walker enjoyed his job. "Being an operator on the El was quite demanding but I looked forward to my job each day," said Walker. "Forty-three years is a long time work at one company and I will look back at my career with great pride."

To memorialize the event, three plaques were unveiled with the names of all of the recent retirees.  The plaques will be hung on the 'Wall of Honor' at SEPTA headquarters.
