Subway-Surface Lines

A portion of the underground Center City section of the Market Street Line was constructed with four tracks — and two of the tracks were to be used for streetcars west of 23rd Street to City Hall. These five routes were known as and are still called the Subway-Surface Routes.

In 1955, the City of Philadelphia extended the subway west, allowing the Subway-Surface routes to operate to around 32nd Street. At that point, Routes 10, 11, 13, 34 and 36 split off to serve various areas of West and Southwest Philadelphia and part of Delaware County. Map
